Qatar Airways has completed a worldwide rollout of SITA’s Software-Defined Wide Area Network (SD-WAN) technology, in what the aviation IT firm calls the first large-scale deployment of its kind by a major global airline.

The new network replaces traditional, fixed infrastructure with a flexible, software-based system that can route data across multiple connections, including broadband, dedicated internet and 5G, selecting the fastest and most secure path in real time. The result is faster response times, greater resilience and improved reliability across the airline’s global operations.

The rollout spans more than 350 outstation sites and multiple data centres, addressing long-standing issues with latency and bandwidth. Essential applications now receive priority access, ensuring smoother performance for mission-critical systems.

For passengers, this means shorter waiting times and faster access to digital services, enhancing the overall travel experience.

Cybersecurity has also been strengthened through multiple layers of protection, including secure channels for all data, strict access controls and a “zero-trust” framework that continuously verifies users and devices. These measures reduce the risk of cyberattacks and ensure business continuity across Qatar Airways’ global network.

“Airlines everywhere are grappling with soaring traffic volumes, rising security threats, and the need to modernise creaking legacy infrastructure,” said Selim Bouri, President for the Middle East and Africa at SITA.

“SD-WAN is a game changer because it delivers the speed, resilience, and protection needed to keep operations running seamlessly at global scale. With Qatar Airways, we’re seeing a flagship example of how next-generation networks can unlock new levels of efficiency and customer experience across the industry.”

For Qatar Airways, the project is part of a broader strategy. “We have always been committed to adopting innovations that strengthen our operations and elevate the passenger journey and experience,” said Suhail Kadri, Chief Information Officer at Qatar Airways.

“Our collaboration with SITA reflects that vision. Together, we are building a network that supports our growth ambitions and sets a new standard for how airlines connect and operate worldwide.”

The airline’s upgraded digital backbone supports operations across 172 destinations and a fleet of 250 aircraft, positioning Qatar Airways to meet growing passenger demand and expand its next-generation aviation network.
