Qatar Airways resumes talks over Meridiana airline stake

Italy minister admits ‘lots of problems’ during discussions on eve of deadline

Qatar Airways has resumed talks with the Italian government with over the possible purchase of a stake in Meridiana airline.

The Gulf carrier said earlier in June it had reached an impasse in negotiations to buy 49 percent of the Italian airline, due to disagreements over working conditions.

Talks have proven difficult, Italy’s transport minister said on Wednesday.

“We have resumed contact with Qatar Airways, but there are lots of problems,” said Graziano Delrio at a parliamentary hearing in Rome.

Delrio was speaking the day before a deadline set for the Italian government, the airline and Meridiana to agree on the terms of the deal.
