The UAE has announced the launch of a national rail network, connecting four major ports.

The news was shared by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, at an official ceremony on Thursday.

The network will connect four ports in the UAE, as well as logistics hubs.

When up and running the network will transport 60m tonnes of goods every year.

In a message to his more than 11m followers on Twitter, Sheikh Mohammed said: “UAE today successfully launched the national railway network. It connects 4 major ports in the country and 7 logistical areas, and transports 60 million tonnes of goods annually.

“Our train network enhances our economy, consolidates our territorial integrity and moves us all towards a better future.

“The rail network is a national strategic project with an estimated economic return of AED200bn by 2050. The project has been completed by the collaboration of 180 federal and local bodies which worked for 133 million hours under the leadership of Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

“A single national team represents a single national economy and a single vision for development.”

Earlier this week Abu Dhabi’s Mubadala and the Oman Etihad Rail Company signed an agreement to develop a $3bn transport network between the United Arab Emirates and Oman.

The 303km railway network, which connects Oman and the United Arab Emirates will include passenger trains running at up to 200 km per hour, reducing the time of the journey between Sohar and Abu Dhabi to 100 minutes, and between Sohar and Al Ain to 47 minutes.
