Czech Airways will boycott its Dubai-Prague flights this month due to insufficient year-round demand, for the service.

According to Marek Plasil, regional director, Czech Airlines the Czech national carrier has unexpectedly announced that it will operate its last service from Prague to Dubai on January 8, 2007.

“The flights to Dubai were only profitable from June to September, the rest [of the year] we suffer a big loss,” he explained.

“I don’t think it’s a good decision, but I’m not president of the company.”

Plasil said the decision was part of the carrier’s plan to resize and restructure its network. Other routes set for the scrap heap include Gatwick, Glasgow, and Sarajevo.

The Czech Tourism Authority told ATN it was “startled and saddened” by the news, but remained confident Arabic visitors would continue to visit.

“It is a bad situation for Czech spas, but we hope that people from UAE will find the way to the Czech Republic,” said Jitka Štìpánková, spa manager, Czech Tourism Authority.
