Demand for staff in Dubai’s catering industry is exceeding supply with the trend shifting towards investment in short-term employees due to high turnover.
Prakesh Sinha, the food and beverage manager of Dubai’s World Trade Centre predicts that businesses are being forced to accept staff lacking experience due to recruitment struggles.
“Food and beverage professionals are now investing in short term staff due to the high turnover and demand. There is such a huge growth in the hospitality segments of India that pay scales are almost on par with the Middle East.”
Sinha said the difficulties faced recruiting staff have degenerated as the economies of Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Thailand improve, as well as the boom in the hospitality industries of Syria, Jordan, Egypt and Morocco.
“Cruise liners have also added to the woe as many young graduates are choosing to join them. The only silver lining is that increasing numbers of young Emiratis are now attracted to this field of work,” Sinha said.
“The solution is to go for more automation and less expectation,” he added.
