Privately owned Iranian airline, Mahan Air, has revealed plans to introduce four more international destinations this year in a bid to strengthen its core strategy of linking the East and West via its Tehran hub.
Flights to Stockholm in Sweden, Almaty in Kazakhstan, Manila in the Philippines and Bishkek in Krygyzstan, are on the agenda, taking Mahan Air’s destination count to 18.
“The real growth will come from the sixth freedom traffic,” said Hossein Hosseini, director of international affairs and route development, Mahan Air, speaking to ATN exclusively.
“At present, around 30% of passengers transit through Tehran, but we expect this to be more than 60% by next year.”
Some of the carrier’s most successful routes are Manchester and Birmingham in the UK, Düsseldorf in Germany, Lahore in Pakistan, and Bangkok.
Destinations in China, Kuala Lumpur, and London Heathrow are on Mahan Air’s wish list, but publicly owned Iran Air is given priority on these routes as the Iranian Government is set on forcefully protecting the national carrier.
