Sharjah has recorded a 10 per cent growth in the number of GCC tourists visiting the emirate, according to new statistics revealed on Monday.
The number of GCC tourists during the first half of 2008 reached 170,000, according to state news agency Wam. The figure is expected to grow a further 15 percent during the second half of the year said the general director of Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority (SCTDA).
“[We expect] a further increase of 15 percent in the GCC tourist influx into the emirate during the remaining period of this summer, and the second half of the year”, Mohammed A Al Noman of SCTDA, told Wam.
In 2007 GCC tourists accounted for 30 percent of the total number of tourists to the emirate. Al Noman stressed the importance of encouraging tourist ties among GCC countries. “GCC countries are considered among the most important tourist exporting countries to Sharjah.”
