Abu Dhabi-based LuLu Group has forayed into the North Indian market, with the opening of the largest supermarket in Lucknow, the capital city of Uttar Pradesh (UP), on Sunday.

The M A Yussuf Ali-promoted Group already has a major presence in Southern India where it has sprawling malls in Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Thrissur – all three in the promoter’s home state of Kerala – and Bangalore in Karnataka.

Home to some of the biggest brands in India – both international and homegrown – LuLu’s Lucknow mall will be opened to the public from Monday.

Its attractions include the mega LuLu Hypermarket and the family entertainment zone Funtura.

The mall houses 15 fine dining restaurants and cafes, and a massive food court with 25 brand outlets that have a capacity of seating 1600 patrons.

Spread over 2.2 million square feet, the LuLu Mall in the north Indian state of UP will also have dedicated wedding shopping arenas for jewellery, fashion and premium watch brands.

An 11-screen multiplex is to be launched later this year.

LuLu Group is also reportedly planning to set up a food and vegetable processing unit in Greater Noida, UP.

The Group already has one food processing facility in the state and another one in Mumbai founded by its affiliate venture Fair Exports.

Besides supermarkets, LuLu Group also is present in realty, finance, retail and departmental stores and hospitality businesses in India.

In the hospitality sector, the Group owns five-star luxury properties and big convention centres in the southern part of the South Asian country.

The Lucknow mall is part of Lulu Group International’s $2.9 billion investment in its retail network, opening 91 hypermarkets between 2020 and 2023.

Nandakumar Vijayan, the Group’s director of marketing and Communications, recently revealed that despite continued headwinds including Covid-19 and other challenges, the Group’s expansion plan across the world was on track.

Vijayan said that Lulu was to open 11 more hypermarkets this year and a further 27 hypermarkets and stores next year.

Of the 91 hypermarkets, the Group has already opened 50 during the Covid-19 pandemic period.

The supermarket chain now has 235 hypermarkets, shopping malls and fulfillment centres across 12 countries including the GCC, India, Malaysia, Indonesia and Egypt.

The group’s operational bases are spread across the UAE, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Philippines, China, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Uganda, South Africa, Turkey, Spain, Italy, UK, USA and India, according to the company website.
