Infrastructure grant

Belgium has granted Burundi US $12.5 million for education, road construction and rural water supply.

The grant is part of the $18.7 million Belgium pledged during a donor conference held in the Burundian capital, Bujumbura, in February this year.

Of the grant, $4.4 million will be put towards building and upgrading roads in the Bujumbura neighbourhoods of Nyakabiga and Bwiza, while $5.6 million will go towards improving education facilities and $2.5 million will be used to boost water supplies in the provinces of Kirundo, Rutana and Ruyigi.

Belgium was the colonial power in Burundi until its independence in 1962.
