Inmarsat is offering Gitex visitors a sneak preview of its Regional B-GAN (Global Area Network) service. The technology will offer users in over 100 countries GPRS-based access to the internet, e-mail or corporate local area networks (LANs) via a Thuraya satellite, a Satellite IP modem and a SIM card.“By the end of the year we will be able to commercially launch Regional B-GAN. When we launch this service… the end user will be able to operate a GPRS-compatible network with coverage in a third of the world,” says Samer Halawi, regional director, Inmarsat.According to the vendor, the technology negotiates the problems of coverage and bandwidth speeds that terrestrial GPRS faces, allowing users in remote location access at speeds of up to 144K/bit/s.“Interference is not an issue because we are using the international frequency band that is allocated to this type of service,” says Mohamed El Amin, director of distribution & market development, Regional B-GAN, Inmarsat.
