Chip manufacturer Intel has played its latest card in the bid to strengthen its consumer electronics foothold by introducing the ‘CE 2110 Media Processor'.

The highly integrated media processor is aimed specifically at the consumer electronics market segment and, according to Intel, will power a new generation of devices such as digital set top boxes and networked media players to bring consumers advanced in-home information and entertainment services.

Intel maintains that the chip's all-in-one component design is a vital feature given consumer electronics manufacturers are under pressure to accelerate their time to market. It will also help producers develop more cost-effective consumer electronics designs to deliver advanced services such as VoIP, video phones, interactive gaming and e-learning.

"The internet is a powerful disruptive opportunity for the CE industry," said William Leszinske Jr, general manager at Intel's CE group. "Intel's work with the consumer electronics ecosystem to power new intelligent devices will help accelerate the availability of a new range of exciting internet-based information and services and video entertainment experiences for consumers throughout the home," he added.
