Fire safety inspections of every building in Dubai are set to be completed by the end of the year, a top Civil Defence official has said.
Ali al Mutawa, DCD’s head of operations, told the National, a team of 300 inspectors are on track to complete their task of checking the emirates’ estimated 60,000 homes, offices and warehouses.
He told the paper the safety initiative to make sure all buildings are fitted with smoke detectors, sprinkler systems and fire exits and alarms, would help Dubai achieve a “zero fire rate”.
“In 2004-2005, there used to be a fire on a daily basis. But today, the reality has changed, and we have gained control over the situation,” al Mutawa told the paper.
He said in the first four months of the year a total of 572 fires were reported, which is 45 percent less than the same period the previous year.
The news comes after a number of serious fires last week, including a massive blaze at the National Paints factory in Sharjah and another at a mattress factory in Al Quoz.
