New crackdown on firms violating fire safety rules

Dubai Civil Defence, Ministry of Labour join forces to increase inspections.

Government organisations have joined forces in a new crackdown on companies in Dubai who violate fire safety regulations.

Dubai Civil Defence and the Ministry of Labour signed a new agreement on Wednesday setting out tough penalties for offending firms.

The agreement stipulates full cooperation between the ministry and Dubai Civil Defence, including joint inspection visits to crack down on violating companies, UAE daily Gulf News reported on Thursday.

The majority of the fires that break out in Dubai are in warehouses, factories and labour accommodations, according to Major General Rashid Thani Al Matroushi, director of Dubai Civil Defence.

“Therefore, we need to focus on these three categories to ensure the safety of lives and properties,” said Al Matroushi in comments published.

Humaid Bin Deemas, acting director general at the ministry, said that companies that violate health and safety standards would be denied new work permits and in certain provisions violators will face criminal charges, adding that referring companies to criminal courts will be the last option used only when the ministry has exhausted all others.
