Online retailer selling iPhone for nearly $500 extra to get device one week early
iPhone 6 enthusiasts in Dubai can get their hands on the new device one week early, if they are willing to pay nearly $500 extra.
A UAE-based online retailer is selling the new iPhone 6 for AED4,399 ($1,197) with delivery on September 20 next, which is AED1,800 ($490) more than what it retails for on the Apple website, who will start deliveries a week later.
The new phone has widely been praised as the best smartphone device ever by reviewers in the United States, and with pre-order sales outstripping supply, customers are willing to pay that bit extra, according to the UAE-based online retailer.
“Right now there is a supply issue,” the retailer told Emirates 24/7. “The device is not available here in the UAE and we have it. At this point all the units are coming from Apple retail stores in other markets, where it is being released on September 19,” he said.
“I can tell you quite honestly that 95 percent of the margin is used to clear the supply chain payments. Once something new launches, we don’t get any profits. It's only when the product gets older that we sort out the supply chain and start making some profit,” he added.
Orders for the new phone have been brisk, not just in the UAE, but also in the GCC region, he said.
“There is a segment of customers who want the device as soon as possible and don’t mind paying some extra amount for it. They are the ones we are catering to,” he added.
