US consultants Johns Hopkins Medicine International is to run the United Arab Emirates’ first molecular imaging centre, Medical Times has learnt.

The group will oversee the centre alongside its current role as operations manager of the government-owned Tawam Hospital, Al Ain.

The molecular centre is the result of tie-up between Mubadala Development and Siemens Medical Solutions. The facility is expected to provide oncology, cardiology and neurology services, and will include a PET/CT diagnostic system and a cyclotron radioisotope delivery system.

The PET/CT system is thought to be the first operational unit in the country.

Dr Ahmed Al Mazrouei, chairman of Health Authority Abu Dhabi, described the news as an excellent example of how commercial expertise can be used to fast-track the public sector's healthcare facilities.
