Amazon to create 250,000 US jobs during the holiday season

However, experts expect new job openings over the last three months of the year to be the lowest in the last 16 years

Amazon.com delivered some good news for the US labour market when it announced it will hire 250,000 workers during the holiday season. However, that number remains unchanged from the previous two years.

In a statement on Monday, Amazon said it would hire full-time, part-time, and seasonal positions throughout its fulfillment and transportation network across the US.

Amazon plans major holiday hiring push

Regular full- and part-time employees earn an average of US$23 per hour with benefits. Seasonal employees at Amazon earn over US$19 per hour on average.

“We find that our seasonal roles are really popular, often filling up within minutes of being posted, because they meet different needs for so many different people,” An Amazon release said. “For some, it’s a few months of extra income to support their families during the holidays. For others, it’s the first step in building a new career path.”

“Every year, we meet employees who started as seasonal hires and go on to become managers, trainers, or leaders across our buildings, and we love that people everywhere can make these jobs what they want them to be.”

Amazon added that the seasonal roles offer great pay, flexible schedules, and the chance to be a part of a team that makes a real difference during the holidays. For those who then stay on in regular full-time roles, the opportunities expand even further, with access to a range of benefits including healthcare and education programs like Caree Choice, where Amazon pre-pays tuition to earn college degrees or certificates.

Amazon also said that it is investing over US$1 billion to increase pay and lower healthcare costs for US fulfillment and transportation employees.

Bloomberg quoted a report by Challenger, Gray and Christmas, an outplacement firm, saying the 2025 holiday season could be muted for retailers in the United States.

Retailers added 543,100 jobs in the final quarter of 2024, down nearly 4 per cent from 2023, as companies waited until late in the season to boost staff. In contrast, Challenger projected retailers may add under 500,000 positions in the last three months of 2025, marking the smallest seasonal gain in 16 years.
