Kuwaiti Uni gets smart with Cisco

Cisco has teamed up with the largest private university in Kuwait to develop a ‘smart campus', based on the vendor's unified communications technology.

Cisco has teamed up with the largest private university in Kuwait to develop a ‘smart campus', based on the vendor's unified communications technology.

The networking giant has joined forces with the Gulf University for Science and Technology (GUST) to establish what it described as a campus-wide virtual learning infrastructure, based on integrated wired and wireless networks.

Cisco said last month the infrastructure, which will cater to 7,000 students, will be one of the most technologically advanced learning infrastructures in the world and will act as a "living laboratory" for similar campuses across the region.

"It will use e-learning content, rich media, multimedia and video conferencing to create a truly interactive environment, where students, faculty and staff can work, engage and collaborate," said Tarek Ghoul, Cisco North Gulf general manager.

The vendor said to achieve its goal of incorporating the best and latest in educational internet protocol (IP) technology, representatives from GUST visited a number of universities and smart campuses around the world.

The range of networking technology supplied by Cisco includes a multi-layer, modular IP-based system, two multi-service, virtualised data centres for multimedia educational services, a multi-level security solution, and high-end administrative functionality.
