Top lawyer leaves Baker McKenzie after twitter comments

Top UAE lawyer Dr Habib Al Mulla says he will not make any apologies for a series of controversial social media comments that led to his departure from Baker McKenzie.

Dr Al Mulla agreed to part ways with the firm, after making a series of twitter posts last week.

Following the remarks, Baker McKenzie issued a statement that the firm and Dr Al Mulla would be “parting ways.”

In a new twitter post, the lawyer said, “Although we did break ways with Baker McKenzie, we will continue to operate as an independent firm and provide our clients with the same level of service they have come to expect. However, out of respect for the friendship, I will keep quiet and avoid commenting on Baker McKenzie. We will begin the separation and exit negotiations next week,” 

Dr Al Mulla is one of the UAE’s most highly respected legal authorities. He has over 38 years’ experience in UAE law and has drafted many of the modern legislative structures in place in Dubai today. Dr Habib is a strong advocate for the improvement and modernisation of UAE Laws. He is a frequent commentator on the legislation and economy of the UAE and is often consulted to draft and advise on Federal and Emirate level laws.”

Dr Al Mulla created the concept of financial free zones in the UAE and was the architect of the legal framework establishing the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), the first financial free zone in the UAE. Dr Habib also served as Chairman of the Legislative Committee of the Dubai Financial Services Authority (DFSA).
