Love in the time of corona': how to celebrate this Mother's Day

Here's how you can (safely) show appreciation for the most important woman in your life

Love in the time of corona': how to celebrate this Mother's Day

Bring out the popcorn and bond over movies like recent Netflix film Otherhood.

1. Have a virtual breakfast:

You can’t schedule a breakfast through Skype yet - though we still hope UAE telecommunication giants Etisalat and du will lift the ban on the programme - but for the meantime you can use services like Botim and TikTok to have some quality time with your mom on Mother’s Day whether you live miles apart or want to practice healthy social distancing.

2. Bake her favourite cake:

If you’re meeting up with your mom, ditch the ready-made dessert and put in the extra effort of baking her favourite cake on your own. You can make a bonding experience out of it and do the baking together. Get creative and add a message in icing such as your favourite quote. Ours is, “If I know what love is, it is because of you” by German poet Hermann Karl Hesse.

3. Have a movie night:

Bring out the popcorn and bond over movies like recent Netflix film Otherhood based on three best friends (played by Angela Bassett, Patricia Arquette and Felicity Huffman) who feel forgotten on Mother’s Day and drive to New York City to reconnect with their adult sons; or opt for an all-time favourite like Susan Sarandon and Natalie Portman’s Anywhere but Here about a mother pursuing a dream of Hollywood success and her daughter who grows frustrated with her impulsive ways.

4. Write a letter:

They say print is dead, but there’s something much more meaningful about taking the time to write words on tangible paper she can keep as opposed to sending a WhatsApp that will get lost in chat history. There are tons of creative templates you can find online, or you can customise your own design. Print a couple of photos of you and your mom in polaroid-style and include them in the envelope for an extra touch.

5. Create a photo album:

Speaking of photos, no mother even said no to a photo album. In an age where most photos are kept on mobile phones and forgotten, customise a photo album with your favourite memories shared with your mom over the past few years. If she’s not a fan of photo albums, print some recent pictures and have them framed to place around the house. If you want to go all-digital, you can always put together an iMovie paired with her favourite background music.

6. Have a DIY spa day at home:

Remember the do it yourself (DIY) cucumber face masks we used to try at home before beauty salons became so prevalent? Now’s the time to try them again. There are plenty of face and hair masks, scrubs and body butters you can make together with your mom to enjoy a spa day while practicing social distancing at home.

7. Send flowers:

There’s no evidence as of yet that coronavirus spreads through flowers so it’s still safe to send your mom flowers on Mother’s Day. We love Dubai’s the Happy Box and its mix of chocolate dipped strawberries or macaroons with all types of flowers delivered within 60-120 minutes. It even has a chocolate fondue box. We also like the special occasion arrangements from Black Tulip Flowers, which offers same day delivery too.

8. Fashion e-gifts:

If you want to send something materialistic, take advantage of the many discounts and offers on e-commerce websites and send your mom an e-gift card she can use whenever she’d like. From Net-a-Porter to Revolve and regional players Ounass and The Modist, the best fashion websites have plenty of stock to offer.
