Dubai shoppers looking to put their best foot forward have the chance to buy the world’s most expensive socks.
Made from the wool of a rare Peruvian camel and presented in a wooden gift box they are a snip at AED4,000 ($1,090) a pair.
A vicuña is a rare South American camelid, which lives high in the Andes mountains in Peru.
It is similar to an alpaca, but lives in the wild and it is only sheared twice a year making its wool extremely valuable.
In Peruvian culture the fine, dense wool is reserved for the highest nobility and it is regarded as the world’s most valuable wool.
A post about the socks on the Falke website says: “After the traditional shearing, the soft and incredibly fine wool hairs of the fleece are carefully freed from the coarser guard hairs and submitted to an elaborate hand-washing and drying process.
“The final step is to spin the velvety, wafer-thin yarns, which still retain their regal grace and elegance to this day.”
If $1,090 is too much for a simple pair of socks, Falke also has pairs it says are made using “Only the best yarns, such as mercerised merino, silk and cashmere are used to create a wide palette of bold, intense colour shades.”.
The emirate is no stranger to superlatives for premium-priced experiences and products.
