A cake weighing over 1,000kg has gone on display in La Farine restaurant at the JW Marriott Marquis Dubai in celebration of Ramadan.
The pyramid-shaped cake took three weeks in total to make and used 1000kg of chocolate, 50 kg of chocolate paste and 6 cans of gold spray, according to Gelly Kalouta, cake artist with Cakes by La Farine. She explained that her pyramid design was inspired by Ramadan.
“We chose the pyramid shape for its associations with strength and power and to celebrate Ramadan. It’s also a gesture of solidarity with our colleagues in Egypt who are celebrating Ramadan in difficult times,” Kalouta said.
A total of ten people were involved in constructing the chocolate masterpiece, she said, with the detailed décor added by Kalouta herself.
“It had to be made layer by layer, with each layer left to dry and harden for a day. 1,000kg of chocolate was melted down and then another chocolate for the top layer,” she said.
The cake will be on display for the remainder of holy month, after which the chocolate will be used to create a new cake.
“It’s a showpiece for Ramadan and after that we will melt it again to create something new. It is sadly not for sale,” she added.
