Restaurant review: Leave the city behind at Miss Lily’s

Expect richly-flavoured Jamaican dishes and a Caribbean-style atmosphere at Dubai restaurant

There’s a reason Miss Lily’s is among Ed Sheeran, Rihanna and Bella Hadid’s favourite hotspots in Dubai. The New York-born Jamaican concept is as cool as it gets. Despite it being located at the Sheraton Grand Hotel on Sheikh Zayed Road, it is in a league of its own.

As in, it is nothing like the posh and swanky venues that surround it. You won’t find floor to ceiling windows overlooking city views, or fancy décor with high-end furniture and fittings. Miss Lily’s is all about laid-back dining in a colourful, Caribbean setting boasting vibrant shades of green, red and yellow. Tables, benches and private group corners are scattered around the cosy shack-looking space. You might as well be on an island, with the easy going staff light-heartedly mingling with customers while taking orders of delightful dishes seasoned with fiery Jamaican spices.

We decided to try the venue’s Blazin’ Brunch – a different experience to Dubai’s usual cosmopolitan (and hectic) scene. The carefree vibes were quick to get to us, as we found ourselves swaying to island tunes and smooth reggae as we enjoyed our exotic dish, the Ackee Hummus. The island fruit with pink skin and giant black seeds is an acquired taste, but in combination with hummus was a delightful dish with a subtly sour flavour. It was served with crispy bread for the perfect match of creamy and crunchy.

The fruit was also mixed with salt fish dumplings for another dish. The taste was strange at first due to its unfamiliarity, but made for a pleasantly moist and spicy tang that we enjoyed.

The highlight, however, was hands-down the Miss Lily’s Burger, served with fat jerk fries and spicy mayo. The meat was exceptionally tender and rich, but it’s worth noting the portions are generous. Our advice is to leave enough space for the burger or share it for two.

You don’t want to leave one bite behind. We took our time to digest, and we didn’t mind passing the time at the blissful, friendly spot. Leave your worries at the door as there’s no room for them at Miss Lily’s.

We ended our experience with a delicious dessert platter of home-style Jamaican favourites ranging from fruit cake to ice cream-covered chocolates.

Miss Lily’s Blazin Brunch begins at 12pm and ends at 4pm, while pricing ranges from AED250 to AED390.
