Dubai is to host a new trade exhibition in April targeted directly at the jewellery industry, organisers at Dubai World Trade Centre have confirmed.

The launch of the Dubai International Jewellery Trade event comes after the success of the 18th edition of the Dubai International Jewellery Week, which was held at the Dubai World Trade Centre last year and attracted more than 23,964 visitors from 99 countries and 367 global exhibitors.

The UAE has a popular hub for gold and jewellery trade, with a 2013 PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) report revealing that gold jewellery consumption in the UAE was estimated at $2.5bn, making it the fifth highest in the world after China, India, United States and Russia.

The report also ranked the UAE as one of the top 13 gold consuming countries.

Michelle Buxani Panjwani of Hong Kong-based diamond specialists Temptations, who attended Dubai International Jewellery Week last year commented: “This was our first time exhibiting in the UAE but definitely not the last. We have exceeded our expectations in terms of our targeted sales for the show and sold jewellery worth more than $2m to buyers from Dubai, India, Kazakhstan and Russia.”

The three-day event in April will provide manufacturers and wholesalers a platform to network with buyers from jewellery consumer markets in the Gulf region as well as India, Russia and CIS countries.
