Top 5 hair tips for summer

Tips to avoid those bad hair days during the summer’s searing heat

The winter season has left Dubai, with highs of 40 degrees Celsius already starting to appear. This only means one thing for all women here: bad hair days.

Luckily, celebrity hairstylist Asgar Saboo has some quick hairstyling tips to keep your hair looking its best this summer.

1. Heat-protection hair serum

Saboo is all-in for the “boho” look, but says it’s important not to let the boho attitude get to your head – literally! “Remember that the sun can seriously damage your hair and it’s important to protect it correctly,” says Saboo. “I would recommend a serum or hair cream to smooth frizz, but it’s essential that you choose something with added heat protection. Always check the label if you’re not sure.”

2. Beach hair

It makes sense that Saboo recommends a salt spray for a summer look. For those who don’t know what a salt spray is, it’s supposed to mimic the beach waves you get from the sea’s salt water. You can make your own salt pray by mixing warm water, Himalayan salts, and optional oils like coconut oil. “Simply spray this over the whole hair – don’t use too much on the ends if you have dry or curly hair – and scrunch with your fingers to get that sexy, tousled look,” says Saboo. According to him, this is something that his celebrity clients are requesting much more, since it’s suitable for both casual days and special occasions.

3. Easy to do buns and plaits

If your hair gets frizzy and you’re short on time to fix it, embrace the up-do, says Saboo. Celebrities like Lily Ghalichi and Jennifer Lopez are sporting the “top knot” bun off and on the red carpet. It can look elegant at the office and edgy at a party. As for plaits, Saboo says he’s seeing many more women styling their hair in plaits. “Frame a heart shaped face with a French braid across the head or soften a round face with a traditional plait at the nape of the neck or a funky fishtail braid,” he says. “We are seeing more plaits on the red carpet, and this can be perfect for many looks. Plus, your hair will be off your face and there’s no chance of it getting knotted or damp with humidity,” continued Saboo.

4. Ditch the straighteners

Though straighteners and curlers can seem like the perfect solution to tame wild summer hair, Saboo thinks natural is the way to go in this case. “Before hair starts getting high maintenance and dramatic again in September, give your hair a break from damaging tools and embrace your natural waves,” he says.

5. Say it with flowers

“Flowers don’t have to be restricted just to festivals, so indulge your inner hippie and don’t be afraid to accessorise,” explains Saboo. His advice is to choose flowers whose colours flatter your skin tone. He prefers rich blue or deep red for Asian skin tones, and orange and tropical colours for olive skin tones. As for paler women, he suggests they go for softer colours, but be free to pick any flower size. “If your hair is thicker then make sure to set the flowers with some Kirby grips so the accessories don’t fall out, and don’t forget the hairspray, especially since it’s so warm and humid outside,” says Saboo.
