“In my 21 years as a photographer, I’ve put myself in danger and got injured more than 20 times. I want to bring to the world’s attention the sufferings of the Palestinian people, but more importantly I want to help to bring to an end the many years of conflict in my land and pray one day that we can achieve peace.” Jaafar Ashtiyeh’s stated mission has not only earned the Palestinian-born photographer global attention and acclaim for his work, but has taken him a long way towards raising the worldwide profile of the plight of Palestinians.
No wonder then that Ashtiyeh won the Arab Journalism Award this year for his coverage of the brutal confrontations between Palestinian and Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank in 2016. The National Press Photographers Association (NPPA) in the US also gave him an honourable mention at their 2017 awards, cementing his powerful influence over public opinion via his work.
