Country of residence: United Arab Emirates
Dr Norah Al Midfa raised the bar for Emirati women when she became the first national to earn a PhD from abroad, having studied in both Kuwait and the US, as well as becoming the first Emirati woman to study and teach at the same time.
But Al Midfa has never stopped raising the bar, continuously teaching courses in education at the Ministry of Education and at educational centres established by the ministry to help girls and women alike continue their studies.
Al Midfa was also reportedly the first female Emirati school principal. She taught and then headed the Al Zahra School in Sharjah. She also took her expertise to Egypt, where she lived for several years. While there, she worked in education in the UAE Embassy and overlooked students from United Arab Emirates University who were sent to Egypt to study.
She has been given the badge of excellence by the Girl Guides Association for her work in helping to improve the education of girls and women.
