You will never see a picture or video of Esra’a Al Shafei due to of the nature of her work as a Bahraini civil rights activist. And yet, the 31-year-old is very well known around the world. She has been on a mission to use the internet to engage young people in the Middle East since 2006. Al Shafei is the founder and director of Majal, an organisation that addresses issues that “receive little or no attention”, from the rights of lower-income migrant workers to artists expressing dissent through music. This year, she was chosen as a 2017 Director’s Fellow at the MIT Media Lab.
