The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority is the state-run company responsible for the provision of electricity and water in the emirate. It arose from the merger of the Dubai Electricity Company and the Dubai Water Department, which had been launched by Sheikh Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum in 1959. In recent years, DEWA has developed into one of the most efficient and innovative public utility companies, succeeding in reducing electricity line losses from seven percent to just 3.3 percent, and unaccounted-for water from 42 percent to 7.1 percent – both now global benchmarks. The company has also committed to investments totalling AED81bn ($22bn) over the next five years to meet the growing demand for electricity and water and to also diversify the energy mix.
