In 2012, When NASA’s Curiosity rover touched down on Mars, it did so with the help of technology developed by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, headed by Charles Elachi between 2012 and 2016.

The rover had to decelerate from a speed of 20,000kmh to zero in just 15 minutes to effect a safe touchdown onto the planet’s surface. Originally from the Lebanese town of Zahle, he is now professor (emeritus) of electrical engineering and planetary science at Caltech.
