Company: Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority
With more than 25 years of experience in global destination and hospitality management, Haitham Mattar was appointed in May 2015 to drive the economic growth of Ras Al Khaimah and assert the emirate’s position as a world-class destination for sustainable tourism.
Mattar’s cross-continent experience and valuable global insights have allowed him to effectively lead Ras Al Khaimah’s destination growth strategy by capturing existing and emerging source market movements and global tourism trends. As part of its “Destination Ras Al Khaimah 2019” strategy, Mattar aims to bring one million tourists to Ras Al Khaimah by the end of 2018, focusing on active adventurers, cultural explorers and luxury indulgence and wellness seekers.
Under Mattar’s leadership, Ras Al Khaimah achieved a Guinness World Record with Jebel Jais Flight: The World’s Longest Zipline. This gained the emirate broad recognition and propelled the destination into the major leagues of global adventure tourism.
Ras Al Khaimah’s tourism industry witnessed a tremendous growth of 8.7 percent between 2014 and 2017, with a reported 19 percent increase in the overall number of guests in 2017 alone. Mattar places a huge emphasis on developing a comprehensive sustainable tourism masterplan that will serve as a main contributor to the Ras Al Khaimah economy in the years to come.
