Industry: Culture and society
Designation: Rapper and activist
Through her music Amani Yahya addresses issues that are taboo in her home country of war-torn Yemen. She uses rap to discuss the struggles faced by women both in Yemen and regionally, including sexual harassment, child marriage, gender inequalities, and other injustices. Yahya pushes ahead with her message, spinning her rhymes in English to make them accessible to a wider group, despite facing backlash from some members of conservative Yemeni society. Despite this, Yahya continues to make music and defiantly advocate for women’s rights and equality in the region.
