Abdo Khal’s satirical novel ‘Spewing Sparks As Big As
Castles’ is banned in his home country but that didn’t stop it from winning the
International Prize for Arabic Fiction in 2010. The award, which is run in
conjunction with the UK’s Booker Prize Foundation, cited Khal for his
“brilliant exploration of the relationship between the individual and the state.
