Telecoms watchdog announces new 'Secure Your Mobile' scheme that allows users to block phones
UAE’s Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) has announced a new scheme that will allow users who have lost their mobile phone to have it blocked within 48 hours.
According to the TRA, the ‘Secure Your Mobile’ initiative is aimed at reducing the number of stolen devices by enabling users to block their device on both Etisalat's and du’s mobile networks, meaning no calls or messages can be originated from or received by the reported mobile device using the IMEI number of the phone.
“With the UAE having the highest consumers of smart devices, we understand how valuable smart devices have become to people in UAE who nowadays use their devices as a primary means of computing,” said Saif bin Ghelaita, TRA’s director technology development affairs.
“Therefore, it is critical we help protect our residents by implementing systems with an easy mechanism to enable users to block stolen or lost mobile devices immediately after reporting them.
Our main objective from this campaign is to protect our consumer’s mobile devices by limiting the chances of getting them stolen or misused,” he added.
Fares Hamad Fares, vice president, corporate communications at Etisalat, said the initiative will reduce the risk of theft of important personal data and misuse.
Today, I went to Etisalat with my lost phone's IMEI number, hoping they can help block my lost phone. But Etisalat's customer service staff told me to go to Jumbo electronics, telling me that only Jumbo has the system to do this.
I have called them but they told that they don't have this facility..What should I do now I also lost my phone
What if the stolen device is taken out of the UAE?
