Sharjah's investment authority inks deal for top-end hotel, set to open in 2015
The luxury Chedi Hotel brand, which already operates in the Gulf region in Oman, will open in Sharjah in 2015, it was announced on Monday.
Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq) announced the signing of the contract with General Hotel Management (GHM) to bring the Chedi to Khorfakkan, Sharjah.
The Chedi Khorfakkan Resort, which represents an investment of more than AED350m, will join the other Chedi hotels in Thailand, Oman, and Bali.
The Chedi Khorfakkan Resort will comprise three components - the fort, the hilltown, and town square, Shurooq said in a statement.
The resort will include 170 suites, restaurants, spa, gym, business facilities and reception, Shurooq added.
An onsite dive centre will run daily trips to some of UAE's best dive sites such as Shark Island, Martini Rock and Three Rocks.
Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmad Al Qassimi, chairman of Shurooq, said: "Sharjah is always keen to support the tourism sector with more investment and projects that build on the foundations and international standards that keep tourists flowing into the emirate.
"This is an important step in increasing the capacity of the area and ensuring quality and sophisticated services are available to the tourists who visit it; it is a great leap forward in the tourism sector."
He added: "Prestige projects like the Chedi Khorfakkan Resort continue Sharjah's growth as a cultural, scenic and tourist destination."
Marwan Bin Jassim Al Sarkal, the CEO of Shurooq, said: "We want to develop Khorfakkan to be not just one of the key ports in the region, but a tourism destination too."For all the latest travel news from the UAE and Gulf countries, follow us on Twitter and Linkedin, like us on Facebook and subscribe to our YouTube page, which is updated daily.
