Man sentenced to 2,000 lashes, 20yrs jail in Saudi Arabia

A man has reportedly been sentenced to 2,000 lashes and 20 years in jail for raping and blackmailing a woman in Saudi Arabia.

The lashings would be partly carried out in public following prayer, in stages of 70 at a time, Arab News reported. Prisoners are typically given time to recover in between sets of lashes, meaning the sentence could be carried out over months or years.

His name also would be revealed at the time of the sentencing, the daily said.

The man, in his 20s, was convicted of violating a housewife and threatening to publish indecent photos of her online.

He reportedly pleaded guilty.
