Qatar bourse shake-up plan to boost performance

Doha Securities Market announces change in 2009 after falling 20% this year.

Qatar’s bourse is changing the composition of its main index at the beginning of 2009, in an apparent effort to include better-performing stocks in the DSM 20 benchmark.

The Doha Securities Market’s index will drop Qatar Telecommunications Co (Qtel), Dlala Brokerage, Qatar Shipping Co and Qatar National Navigation Co, the bourse said on its website, adding that the change would take effect as of the beginning of 2009.

The four companies will be replaced by Masraf al-Rayan, Al Khaliji Commercial Bank, Gulf Holding and Barwa Real Estate, it said.

Qtel’s share was down more than 31 percent this year to Wednesday’s close, Qatar Shipping had lost about 32 percent, Qatar navigation had dropped 21 percent, while Dlala had gained 9 percent.

Masraf al-Rayan was down more than 32 percent to Wednesday’s close, Al Khaliji was down 16 percent, Gulf Holding had fallen 4.9 percent, while Barwa had gained 1.8 percent.
