A new study, based on Google Trends data of search terms frequently used, ranks the UAE as one of the most stock-obsessed countries in the world.

The UAE was placed fifth in the list of countries, which was headed by Singapore and followed by India as the two top nations that are most interested in stocks and trading. Canada was in third place and the UAE was just behind the United States of America, but ahead of countries like Australia (No. 6) and the United Kingdom (No. 9).

The study was carried out by the UK-based CMC Markets. It looked at searches for eight key terms – ‘Stocks’, ‘Buy Stocks, ‘Invest in Stocks’, ‘Stock Market’, ‘Interest Rate’, ‘Day Trading’ and ‘Swing Trading’. These terms were then combined to give each English-speaking country a ‘total search score’ to find out which countries have been the most interested in stocks in the past 12 months.

The UAE had a total search score of 374. The study revealed that the country has the fourth-highest search levels for the term ‘Swing Trading’ and is the fifth country most interested in ‘Day Trading’.

Singapore ranks highest with a total search score of 555 out of a possible 700. It topped the list for its population having the highest search levels for the phrases ‘Stocks’, ‘Buy Stocks’, and ‘Interest Rate’ worldwide. Also, the population of Singapore search for ‘Stock Market’ the third most in the world after the United States and India.

Canada was third with a score of 462, thanks to the second-highest level of searches for the term ‘Invest in Stocks’, and third for ‘Buy Stocks’.

The United States had a total score of 453, with the highest level of searches for both terms ‘Invest in Stocks’ and ‘Stock Market’, and the fourth-highest level of searches for the term ‘Buy Stocks’.

Australia is sixth on the list with a total search score of 338, followed by South Africa, New Zealand, the UK and Nigeria.
