Japanese trading house Marubeni has taken a US $2.3 billion (QR8.4 billion) deal to build a thermal power plant in Qatar.
It will be one of the world’s largest independent power projects and is due for completion in April 2010.
Marubeni and Qatar Electricity and Water Company will each share a 40% stake in the power plant, while the remaining 20% will be held by Qatar Petroleum.
Marubeni is already working on a major contract to expand sewage treatment facilities in the country.
The plant will generate around 2,000mW – enough to power around 600,000 homes.
