Masdar City ground-breaking to begin

Construction starts on zero-carbon, zero-waste city.

Groundbreaking on Masdar City, the zero-carbon, zero-waste city, begins on 9th February.

The Foster+Partners-designed project for the Masdar Initiative, located just outside Abu Dhabi, promises to be the first carbon-neutral city in the world and is hoped to set a benchmark for sustainable city design.

During the World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi in January, architect and Masdar masterplanner Lord Foster revealed that landscape architecture would play an important role in conserving energy in the city, with the masterplan orientating the city to maximise shading in public squares.

Masdar's CEO Dr. Sultan Al Jaber will announce previously unreleased details on the construction and financing of Masdar City during a keynote address at the ceremony. The event will be culminated by the laying of a 'cornerstone.' Masdar's photovoltaic testing facilities will produce solar power reserves to offset the groundbreaking process.
