Winter has officially started in the GCC, with the temperature dipping to 9 degrees Celsius in parts of the UAE and snow falling in the northern provinces of Saudi Arabia.

On Wednesday, the shortest day of the year, the UAE’s National Center for Seismology and Meteorology (NCMS) warned of poor visibility on the roads due to heavy fog and mist, and low temperatures, possibly even plummeting to 5 degrees Celsius at night in parts of the country.

On Tuesday night, a low of 9 degrees Celsius was recorded in the UAE, while the NCMS said the weather is expected to be partly cloudy with light to moderate winds up until Friday.

In Saudi Arabia, deep snow blanketed the provinces of the Northern Borders and Al-Joof, local media reported.

Snowfall began on Tuesday, and video recordings showed rain and hailstone in the governorate of Qurayat.
