Missed opportunities

This March will see the inaugural Interiors UAE take place in the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre, a second dedicated interiors event after Dubai's very own Index.

This March will see the inaugural Interiors UAE take place in the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre, a second dedicated interiors event after Dubai's very own Index.

And what an opportunity for international interiors manufacturers and designers to ply their trade in one of the fastest growing economic areas of the world.

The furniture market in the UAE alone is reporting an annual growth of 24%, set against more than over 2,500 existing and planned projects throughout the GCC.

Yet despite this, these local exhibitions are still failing to attract the biggest names in interior design, who clearly prefer vying for space in Europe's overcrowded design extravaganzas.

The Salone de Mobile being a case in point, sucking the lifeblood out of manufacturers who focus all their efforts on trying to outdo the competition in this six-day design procession.

But by choosing to remain in Europe year after year, these manufacturers are missing the bigger picture. Contracts of a size that can rarely be won in older, more established markets, are up for grabs in the Gulf.

Lets hope that these companies wake up to the financial opportunities that await them by exhibiting in our regional shows in the not too distant future.
