Jordan Belfort, the real-life inspiration behind The Wolf of Wall Street, told a Dubai audience that wealth alone does not guarantee fulfilment – but being poor, he insists, “sucks”.

Belfort said he has been “rich and miserable” and “poor and miserable”, but “never poor and happy”. Money, he argued, is simply “a basic problem that needs to be solved” in order to build a meaningful life.

Belfort rose to fame selling penny stocks to unsuspecting investors during the 1980s and 1990s. He and his team manipulated markets and defrauded investors out of more than $200 million, leading to his conviction for securities fraud and money laundering in 1999.

His notoriety comes largely from the outrageous lifestyle that fuelled his downfall, inspiring The Wolf of Wall Street, the 2013 Martin Scorsese film starring Leonardo DiCaprio. His excesses were the stuff of legend: wild yacht parties with celebrities and models, crashing helicopters, and famously sinking his luxury yacht.

Now a speaker and consultant, Belfort focused less on his criminal past and more on the mindset required to rebuild after failure. He spoke openly about serving time in a US federal prison, calling it the lowest point of his life. “You’re a loser when you’re in jail. You’ve lost the game of life,” he said. What kept him going, he told the audience, were the faces of his two young children. “They were my why. I wanted to prove their dad could come back stronger.”

Belfort also shared childhood stories from New York, recalling that he was an entrepreneur at 10 years old. He ran newspaper routes, performed children’s magic shows and sold ice cream on Jones Beach, earning thousands of dollars each summer. Those experiences, he said, cemented his belief that “the harder I work, the more I can achieve”.

His closing message to the Dubai crowd was clear: “Reinvention is possible. You can lose everything and still rebuild – if your vision is clear and your why is strong.”
