Moorfields Eye Hospital Dubai (MEHD), the first overseas branch of the renowned UK-based Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, treated its first patients last month. From a facility in Dubai Healthcare City, Moorfields will provide care for a variety of surgical and non-surgical eye disorders. "We plan to make a significant contribution to healthcare delivery in the GCC and beyond, through research and training, and incorporating the best internationally recognised standards of medical practice," said Dr. Chris Canning, chief executive and medical director of Moorfields Eye Hospital Dubai.

"The team that we have assembled represents the best in their respective fields, and I'm sure that any visitor to the Hospital will see that in terms of design, functionality and state of the art equipment, it is paramount in its class."

Moorfields Eye Hospital London claims to be the oldest centre for ophthalmic care, teaching and research in the world. Last year, the hospital conducted over 23,000 ophthalmic operations. A number of ophthalmic specialists are resident in Dubai and the hospital will regularly receive visiting consultants from London.

A recent addition to the team is Dr. Edmondo Borasio, a consultant surgeon who is a graduate of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery at the University of Turino, Italy. Dr. Borasio qualified as a Fellow of the European Board of Ophthalmology and has been a Fellow of Moorfields Eye Hospital in London since 2004, where his focus has been corneal and refractive surgeries.

He is experienced in the use of the excimer laser and femtosecond laser, which is proving beneficial in corneal refractive surgery. Moorfields in Dubai will soon have both lasers installed. Dr. Borasio co-developed a new formula (BESSt) for estimating corneal power after laser refractive surgery. A software program containing the formula (BESSt Corneal Power Calculator) has been developed and is currently in use by ophthalmologists worldwide.
