Telecoms equipment giant Alcatel-Lucent has acquired unified network solutions provider NetDevices.

US-based NetDevices provides an enterprise networking platform known as a Unified Service Gateway, which is designed to reduce cost and complexity of managing branch office networks.

Hubert de Pesquidoux, president of Alcatel-Lucent's enterprise activities, described NetDevices as a "fresh approach" to enterprise networking.

"A fresh approach based on the innovative enterprise platform from NetDevices combined with our core strengths of voice and switching helps to deliver best in class enterprise networks," he said.

Terms of the deal, which is expected to close during Q2, were not disclosed.

For the first quarter, Alcatel-Lucent posted an operating loss of US$330million. However, the firm reported net income of US$269million. Despite profits falling around 35% year-on-year, the figure is an improvement on Q4 last year, which saw the firm post a net loss of US$796million.
