Netscape 8.1 targets net nuisances

AOL has released a new version of Netscape's longstanding web browser that can better help online users fight against spyware and phishing attacks.

AOL has released a new version of Netscape's longstanding web browser that can better help online users fight against spyware and phishing attacks.

According to the firm, Netscape 8.1 features an integrated spyware and malware scanning tool that checks the files a user downloads by a user as well as files sent without the user’s knowledge.

This latest version also features a list of phishing websites and a security centre from which users can view the status of protection provided by the browser.

Similar to the upcoming Internet Explorer 7.0 - expected to release this summer - Netscape 8.1 features support for RSS (Real Simple Syndication) feeds and tabbed browsing. However, one main difference is that Netscape has added a new profile manager, which allows different users to use the same browser, while simultaneously maintaining each user’s unique set of bookmarks, passwords and browser settings.

The Netscape 8.1 also allows users to manually install software apps such as McAfee Virus Scanner and RealPlayer 10.5.

Users interested in downloading Netscape’s new browser can do so by visiting http://browser.netscape.com.
