New Jeddah dump opens to handle construction waste

A new landfill site to hold construction waste and covering 1 million m2 was opened last week by the Jeddah Municipality in Saudi Arabia.

A new landfill site to hold construction waste and covering 1 million m2 was opened last week by the Jeddah Municipality in Saudi Arabia.

The new dump can easily contain 3 million m3 of construction process waste.

According to the director general of the coordination department at the municipality, Ibrahim Siba'a, the dump is now ready to hold construction material from the hundreds of construction sites throughout the area.

"Since many huge projects are under construction, especially in the northern part of Jeddah, the dump will collect waste resulting primarily from infrastructure works," he said.

The new Thuwal Dump is provided with a sufficient number of workers and supervisors assigned to oversee the work process inside the dump.

Siba'a said all the necessary equipment and communication devices are operable. The new dump can also hold the waste from projects that may even extend as far as Rabigh, the new economic city north of Jeddah.

All construction companies working in the area have been cautioned against throwing their building waste elsewhere. Violators face severe penalties, Siba'a said.

Siba'a urged all contractors and companies in the north Jeddah area to use this dump.
