New metro line to link Dubai airports

The new Purple Line will provide an express service between Dubai International and Jebel Ali Airports.

Dubai’s Road and Transport Authority has announced a new metro line to provide a high-speed link between Dubai International and Jebel Ali airports.

The Purple Line, due to launch in December 2012, will cover 49km and have eight stations, three of which will have airline check-in facilities.

Trains will be automatically operated with an average speed of 100 km per hour and reaching maximum speed of 160 km per hour. Average speed on the Red Line, currently under construction, will be 45 km per hour.

The trip between the two airports will take about 40 minutes including stopping time.

Parsons Brinckerhoff will work on the intial design, due for completion in May 2008. Construction is scheduled to begin in March 2009.
