Olympic Council of Asia President Sheik Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah says Qatar interested in bidding
Qatar is interested in hosting the 2020 summer Games, Olympic Council of Asia President Sheik Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah said on Wednesday.
With less than two months before the deadline for applications only Rome has been officially confirmed, with Spain's Madrid unveiling yet another bid on Wednesday that still needs to be rubberstamped by city legislators in a week.
"I hear Doha have interest," Sheikh Ahmad told Japan's Kyodo news agency. "This is what I'm hearing, but we don't have anything officially announced yet."
The tiny Gulf emirate won the right to host the 2022 soccer World Cup last December but have been forced to issue several statements denying allegations of corruption associated with their surprise winning bid.
Tokyo and Istanbul are also considering a run for the 2020 Games. For all the latest sports news from the UAE and Gulf countries, follow us on Twitter and Linkedin, like us on Facebook and subscribe to our YouTube page, which is updated daily.
I say we should go for it.
Come on Dubai, why bother building Dubai Sports City if it isn't going to be used for anything....get Sports City finished, put in some investment, back the venture and start bidding on some big events to get Dubai back on the map again and bring in some much needed money from sports tourists. With the right investment and infrastructure Dubai Sports City could be a real asset to Dubai....at the moment it is just a white elephant used once in a blue moon for the cricket.....and even that was badly handled with the terrible lack of traffic control, no parking facilities and no where for pedestrians to safely cross Emirates Road.
Whilst your comment is spot on.....the bare facts are completely different. If what you have written happens then the investors in DSC will be the happiest people on the planet. I have 3 friends who have invested there.....lost big time but it is not affecting them because they did'nt expose themselves into millions. The only positive side for 'em is it is already handed over. Lot of other projects have to be even dug for a foundation yet. Sustainable events organised in DSC will see it back on track again slowly and steadily. Not in the very near future though. I'm not being optimistic but I would love to see Dubai being in the limelight again for the right reasons.
Jane most olympic bids are a financial disaster. I think the only that did well in terms of money once all costs are accounted were Barcelona and atlanta.
Olympic games are pure vanity primers, something that Doha can well afford but not sure about Dubai.
I am surprised that with Dubai with all the facilities and a well connected airport hub is not making a bid. UAE could make the bid and make Dubai & Abu Dhabi the locations for the games. Qatar is still many million miles behind Dubai in all aspects. Moreover Dubai is so well known in the international community that they could make the economy bounce bak.
It is a pity that UAE does not think in these lines.
