A total of 105 illegal taxi drivers of different nationalities have been jailed and fined in Bahrain, according to local media.

The drivers were sentenced to a month in jail and issued with a $2,652 (BD 1,000) fine, according to Gulf Daily News. The non-Bahraini drivers were deported when the jail term was completed.

According to the Director of Traffic Operations and Control at the General Directorate of Traffic, the accused were arrested earlier and referred to the Public Prosecution.

He added that such violations risk the safety of registered Bahraini taxi drivers and that the department will continue to monitor the industry for further offences.
