Pearl enabling award soon

The enabling package on the Dubai Pearl Towers, which is part of the Pearl Dubai development, is expected to be awarded this month.

The enabling package on the Dubai Pearl Towers, which is part of the Pearl Dubai development, is expected to be awarded this month.

The main construction package will be awarded early next year. Germany's Schweger Associates and Australia's CK Design Works are the architects on the project.

Speaking to Construction Week, Lawrence Elms, principal, project development, Dubai Pearl said: "Construction on the project will start this month after we award the enabling and mobilisation works contract. The tenders have been sent and we're just waiting to take a decision now.

"As for the main construction job, we're in negotiations with a very select few local and international companies. We have divided the contract into three parts including the structure, services and finishes."

Pearl Dubai, a consortium of investors led by the Al Fahim Group, has taken over and repositioned the US $3 billion (AED10 billion) Dubai Pearl.

The project, whose blueprint has seen a signficant change, was originally conceived by Omnix Group in 2002.

Located within the Dubai Media and Technology Free Zone (Tecom) and overlooking Palm Jumeirah, the project will now be developed with a built-up area of more than 1.4 million m2.

"This is the last of the Tecom land to go and Dubai Pearl will be built into an integrated, mixed-use, sustainable development with all key components located within 400m of each other," said Abdul Majeed Al Fahim, chairman of Board of Directors, Pearl Dubai.

The project is expected to be completed by December 2010.

Although Al Fahim Group has several major investments in the UAE, this will be its first major property development project in the region.
